Summer is here, and many people will be heading out on exciting road trips with family and friends. However, before you can hit the road, there are few important things you should do to prepare your RV. Creating an RV checklist can help ensure everything is inspected and ready to go in time for your next summer adventure.
Not sure where to begin? We’ve put together a list of five things to do before you head out on vacation. Here’s a closer look:
1. Check All of Your Tires
Before you leave home to make travel memories that will last a lifetime, it’s crucial to check your RV tires. After all, if your wheels aren’t in good condition, you might not make it very far on your road trip!
First, determine the tire pressure in each wheel. Every RV manufacturer has different pressure requirements, so it’s important to consult your owner’s manual if you don’t already know what pound per square inch (PSI) is correct. You should also inspect your wheels to ensure all lug nuts are screwed on properly.
2. Clean Out the Water System
If you planned ahead for winter, you might have put RV antifreeze in your water system. This was a smart thing to do, but you don’t want to leave it in there while you travel. Be sure to flush out your water supply by filling and emptying all of your tanks a few times. This should remove any remaining chemicals.
3. Change Smoke and Carbon Monoxide Detector Batteries
Just like you do for your house, it’s important to switch out the batteries on your RV’s carbon monoxide and smoke detectors every few months. Staying up to date with this essential task is crucial to keeping you and your family safe while you’re on the road.
4. Check All Seals
The winter months can be hard on your seals, especially if you live in a place with a lot of rain, snow, or freezing temperatures. When it’s time for your first summer trip, take a few minutes to inspect all of the seals around your RV windows, doors, and vents. If anything looks cracked or otherwise damaged, replace it as soon as possible. This will help you minimize the risk of water damage inside your vehicle.
5. Inspect and Clean the Roof, Doors, and Windows
If you stored your vehicle outside during the winter, it’s likely in need of a good cleaning. Don’t show up at your favorite campground with your RV caked in grime! Take some time to hose it off and scrub it down before your next trip.
This is also a great time to inspect your RV roof, doors, and windows for any signs of damage. By doing this ahead of time, you can avoid larger issues down the road.
