Protect Your RV Roof from Winter Damage

If your RV is parked outside during winter, you are at risk for serious RV roof damage due to excessive snow buildup. It doesn’t have to be an enormous amount of snow—a few inches can be very harmful due to the moisture buildup. If you don’t take time for RV winterizing now, you may face a hefty RV roof repair bill come spring. Here are the three steps you should take to protect your RV roof during the winter.

Step 1: Use RV Roof Sealant to Repair Damage

Inspect the roof for any leaks or damage and get it fixed. A fresh coat of RV roof sealant will help protect the roof and significantly reduce any moisture damage that occurs from the snow. You do not have to seal the entire roof, but you should check the seams and around fixtures and moldings on a yearly basis.

Step 2: Remove Snow as Quickly as Possible

Most RV roof damage that occurs in the winter is due to snow buildup. So after a snowstorm is over, the first thing you should do is go remove the snow. Even if your RV roof has a cover on it, it is no match for a massive pile of snow. Use a plastic snow shovel to scrape the snow off because a metal or aluminum one could damage the roof. Make sure to only remove the snow, and stop when you hit ice. With the snow off, the ice will begin to melt and it will slide off the RV. If you try to break up the ice to get it off, you could require some serious RV roof repair.

Step 3: Never Stand on Your RV Roof

When you are shoveling off the snow, try not to stand on the roof itself as the surface could be slippery, causing a safety issue. Additionally, it is already fragile with the heavy buildup of precipitation, and you don’t need to add the extra weight to your roof.
