Your RV seals play an important role in keeping water out of your vehicle. However, over time, they can become damaged from freezing temperatures, ultraviolet rays, air pollution, and exposure to the elements. Therefore, you must stay on top of inspecting and maintaining all of your RV rubber seals, including your window seals, slide out seals, and entry door seals.
Fortunately, the process of sealing is not that difficult, and you should be able to handle it on your own.
Examine Your Seals Regularly
It’s good to get in the habit of inspecting all of your RV windows, RV window parts, your RV roof, and all four sides of your vehicle (including your RV slide out seal) every six months. As you walk around your camper, inspect your vents, moldings, doors, and RV parts for signs of deterioration. This process can help you find and fix potential problems before they become significant (and expensive) issues. If you notice any gaps, cracks, breaks, or peeling, you’ll need to replace your seals immediately.
When you stay on top of regular inspections, you can minimize your risk of water damage within your RV. Even if your seals don’t look worn, it’s still recommended to reseal your RV at least once per year to keep leaks from developing.
Remove Old Seals
Too often, RV owners put new seals right on top of the old. Unfortunately, your worn, damaged seals do not provide a solid base for the new ones. This practice can cause potential leakage issues and could mitigate all of the hard work you put into resealing your vehicle.
With this in mind, it’s important to take the time to remove your old, cracked, or crumbling seals. Then, thoroughly clean the area before installing your new seal to ensure a tight closure. Razor blades are an effective way to remove old side seals; however, it’s best to use something blunt (like a putty knife) on your RV roof, as this material is easy to cut through.
