Which RV Roof is Best for You?

The roof is one of the most valuable items on your Recreational Vehicle. It saves you from numerous seasonal elements like sun and rain.  Choosing the best RV roof material is largely a matter of personal preference. Still, there are some factors that you should be aware of before you begin shopping for a new roof. Two of the most popular options on the market for today’s RVs are SuperFlex and EPDM. Both are synthetic polymers that are designed specifically for use on RVs. They offer low maintenance roofing solutions, but each has its own pros and cons to consider.

Before you can compare the two, you really have to understand a little more about what they are.

Features and Differences

EPDM

Commonly known as a “rubber roof”, EPDM stands for ethylene propylene diene monomer and gets its name from the chemicals (monomers) that are mixed in various proportions to form it. EPDM roofs are more flexible and durable than traditional RV roofs, and are also resistant to UV rays, punctures, and leaks. EPDM products are easier to install, making them a popular choice among DIYers for their ease of installation and lack of maintenance required. With regular cleaning and care, a rubber roof can last a long time with minimal or no need for repairs.

Superflex

An Olefin-based single-ply membrane that features an extremely lightweight construction when compared to the EPDM rubber roof. EPDM roofs are almost double the weight of Superflex roofs.  A Superflex roof will also lower the center of gravity by lowering the weight at the roof line.  Less weight also provides more load capacity and better fuel milage.

As the name itself suggests, these roofs are super flexible and stretchable. They easily conform to the various contours of the unique designs of the RVs. They do not fade or chalk easily.   Superflex is easy-to-repair whenever the need arises.  It does not shrink or crack and provides 100% solid sealants.
