The Art of RV Travel: Snowbirding

As seasons pass and the temperature changes, many full-time RVers make the decision to chase the warmth of the South during winter. These RV travelers are sometimes called “snowbirds” because their movement resembles the migration patterns of some tropical birds.

Snowbird destinations will vary based on a variety of factors such as location, distance, and cost. Generally speaking, coastal and desert areas tend to be the most common landing-places. The coastal locations are usually in the Southeastern region of the United States whereas the desert locations refer to those in the Southwest. Regardless of the sojourn, your camping experience can vary, depending on if you’re looking for a more economical, boondock-style vacation or a more high-end country club with luxurious accommodations.

While both southeastern and southwestern locations are popular RV travel destinations for snowbirds, they both come with their own unique set of pros and cons. By traveling towards the Coastal Southeast to spots in South Carolina and the Gulf Coast, you are rewarded with tropical weather, but must also deal with the high levels of humidity that come with it. While the Southwest sports a decidedly drier climate, you must also take the prickly plants and dust that scatter the desert plains as well as the cooler nighttime temperatures.
