Seven Common RV Questions New Owners Ask

The RV lifestyle is one of freedom and adventure – you can travel anywhere and see anything, all from the comfort of your “home” on the road. Purchasing an RV is an exciting milestone for many, but ownership can also come with a few challenges.

Naturally, new RV owners have a lot of questions at first, especially if they are just dipping their toes into the world of motorhomes. Below, we’re addressing some of the most asked questions when it comes to new (and new-to-you) RVs. Let’s take a look!

1. What Are the Most Common RV Problems?

Whether you recently invested in a brand-new camper or purchased a used one, there are a few problems you should keep an eye out for. While RVs are made to resemble a home and have many of the amenities found in one, these parts are made for mobility, which can lead to certain problems. For example, toilet issues happen even in a permanent residence, but RV life can shorten the lifespan of your vehicle’s bathroom due to repeated bumping and bouncing. Tire issues often arise, too – being on the road often makes holes, nails, and flats quite common. It’s also a good idea to keep an eye on your roof and windows, as these can take a lot of damage while exposed to the elements.

2. Does My RV Need to Be Inspected?

Depending on which state you live in, you might need to have your vehicle inspected before you can hit the road for the first time. To find out your local requirements, check with your department of motor vehicles office. In many cases, you can get your RV inspected at the dealership or an affiliated repair shop.

3. What Are the Gray and Black Tanks?

Most recreational vehicles have three different water tanks: freshwater, gray water, and black water. The freshwater tank stores the clean water that comes out of your taps. Meanwhile, the grey water tank store dirty water from the shower and sink, and the black water tank holds waste directly from the toilets. If your RV doesn’t have a grey tank, all of your used water will be stored in the black tank.

4. Should I Winterize My RV?

If you live somewhere that gets sub-freezing temperatures in the winter, you’re likely familiar with the issues that can arise with water lines, pipes, and pumps. These aren’t just common in homes – they can affect RVs, too. Improper storage is the most common culprit for those that don’t use their vehicles during the winter. Therefore, if you plan on storing your RV when it’s cold out, it’s important to winterize it properly.

 5. How Often Should I Upgrade MY RV Seals?

Your RV seals keep the elements out and help prevent issues like water damage, making them an essential component of your vehicle. It’s recommended to check your seals annually to ensure they’re in good condition. Catching problems early on can help you avoid major damage – and save money in the long run.

6. How Do I Maintain My RV?

There are many ways to keep your RV in the best possible shape, from frequent cleaning to annual safety inspections. It’s crucial to learn the common issues and concerns to best understand what to look for when conducting RV maintenance. At the very least, be sure to check all of your seals, clean your siding, and inspect and clear your roof often. Your dealership can provide additional steps necessary to care for your specific model.
